Patriot is located on a 9-tier, public staircase continuing West 187th Street up a steep, 58-foot elevation to the highest part of Manhattan with commanding view of the Hudson River and New Jersey Palisades.  At 130 steps and 230 feet in length, it is the largest step street in Manhattan.   Located a block from the site of historic Fort Washington, a Colonial stronghold taken by England during the Revolutionary War, this artwork honors the 2,838 American soldiers captured with the fort and left to die on British prison ships.  The bones of many of these soldiers, and others, are interred in the Prison Ship Martyr’s Memorial in Fort Greene Park, Brooklyn.
